ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial intelligence (AI) comprises the study and design of intelligent agents, where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success. The field was founded on the claim that intelligence, a central property of humans, can be so precisely described that it can be simulated by a machine. Artificial intelligence has been the subject of optimism, but it has also suffered setbacks and, today, has become an essential part of the technology industry, providing the heavy lifting for many of the most difficult problems in computer science.

AI research, highly technical and specialized, is divided into subfields. One subfield of particular interest to multiple-valued logic is an area termed fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic is concerned with the formal principles of approximate reasoning; everything, including truth, is a matter of degree. Precise reasoning is viewed as the limiting case. Fuzzy logic plays a role in the remarkable human ability to make rational decisions in an environment of uncertainty and imprecision.
